Over the course of the release of an EP or an album, it shouldn’t be terribly surprising that you may come across multiple singles from a particular act around here. Now, if you’ve been frequenting JOVM for the past few months or you’re a more recent follower, you may remember coming across a piece on the Minneapolis, MN-based trio Bad Bad Hats. Psychic Reader, the band’s full-length debut was produced by Brett Bullion, best known for his work with Poliça, Bon Iver, and is slated for a July 17 release through Afternoon Records. Whereas the album’s first single “Shame” was comprised of angular and buzzing guitar chords, sobbing bass and propulsive drumming paired with Kerry Alexander’s silkily seductive vocals, the band’s latest single, album title track “Psychic Reader” is an atmospheric song consisting of shimmering guitar chords, paired with shimmering synths, four-on-the-floor-like drumming and wobbling bass paired with Alexander’s silky croon. Sonically, the song channels 80s New Wave but the lyrics concern themselves with what sounds like a booty call gone horribly, horribly wrong and its rather awkward aftermath – but it does so in a way that suggests that the protagonist not only desired sex but would have wanted to get off from it, too.
