R&B vocalist and songwriter Sola has been garnering attention across the blogosphere for a sound that many of my colleagues have compared to the likes of Banks, Tove Lo and Lykke Li for its slick, electronic pop-based production, its personal and very lived-in songwriting. Her latest single “Down 4 You” off her latest mixtape Narcotics possesses a moodily atmospheric tension between sparse skittering percussion and synths, swirling electronics, looped vocal samples and Sola’s unforced, coquettish vocals. And although the song’s sound is polished and buffed, it does so without cleansing the raw and very sensual lust and longing that are at the heart of the song.
