Shabazz Palaces continues Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler’s (of Digable Planets) reputation for creating a sound that uncompromisingly defies easy description or categorization. With his collaborative partner, Baba Maraire, the sound on the band’s last release, Black Up was psychedelic, kaleidoscopic and at times surrealistic hip hop with layers of swirling electronics, odd syncopations, and Butler’s ridiculous flow.

Baba Maraire’s solo project, Chimurenga Renaissance continues Shabazz Palaces’ mission of trippy, surreal hip-hop as you’ll hear on “The B.A.D. Is So Good,” the first single from Chimurenga Renaissance’s forthcoming album rIzE vadZimu. Sonically, the single bears a similarity to Shabazz Palaces, in the sense that there are layers of swirling electronics and odd syncopation, but the flow seems as though it owes a debt to mainstream hip hop but with a playful rhyme scheme — it some way it feels like tripping on some hallucinogen.

Maraire just released this extremely cinematic video for “The B.A.D Is So Good,” which seems to be an almost “day in the life” sort of video.
