“Spell Breakers,” the first single from Burnt Ones’ third album, Gift. And interestingly, the album marks not just their Castle Face Records debut, it also serves as a bit of document of a weird time to San Francisco’s psych rock scene. (Thee Oh Sees, one of the biggest bands of that scene are in what appears to be an indefinite hiatus as John Dwyer has moved down to L.A. and started a new project; the Mallard split up after the release of Finding Meaning in Deference, among others.
The song sounds somewhat lo-fi and bears a resemblance to the Stone Roses, if they recorded tracks in someone’s garage, on warped and dusty, old analog tape, complete with guitars played with a dulled shimmer. And yet, it’s trippy as fuck.
