Throwback: Happy 61st Birthday, Branford Marsalis!

The past week has been rather auspicious for music: John Lee Hooker’s birthday was Sunday. Keith Moon‘s birthday was Monday. Today Branford Marsalis turns 61. As a child of the 80s, I can clearly remember a brash, baseball cap wearing Marsalis in Sting‘s documentary and concert film Bring On The Night — and the fact that was nearly 40 years ago is kind of fucking with me right now.

Unsurprising, as an aforementioned child of the 80s, I wound up being introduced to Marsalis through his work with Sting — and I happen to adore that work the most. It brings very fond memories of my folks playing those albums, and asking me which songs I liked and why. Maybe they were trying to raise a music critic, right? But seriously, I wanted to wish Mr. Marsalis a very happy birthday! May there be many, many more!
