Sharon Jones, the dynamic, charismatic, hilarious, and larger than life front woman of the acclaimed soul outfit Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings was born 67 years ago today. She was one of life’s true characters, and those who know her and love her miss her dearly.
Live, Ms. Jones was something else. I had the pleasure of seeing her perform three times — including famously at the three-night, Daptone Records‘ Daptone Super Soul Revue residency at the Apollo Theater. Sadly, Jones died of cancer about a year after the concert. But if you watch the live footage, you can see why her fans loved her so much.
Happy birthday, Sharon! Happy birthday, wherever you are. You’re missed dearly.
