The legendary godfather of soul, the Soul Brother #1, James Brown was born 91 years ago today. His influence on contemporary music is towering: Without Brown, there isn’t Parliament Funkadelic, Rick James or early hip-hop. And I doubt anyone would have even heard of Bootsy Collins either.
