Throwback: RIP John “Ecstasy” Fletcher

I was out running a couple of errands when I heard the news that Whodini’s John “Ecstasy” Fletcher reportedly died at 56. With an incredible run of smash hits recorded and released between 1983 and 1987, Whodini not only were instrumental in hip-hop’s popularization and its push to mainstream acceptance, their music was part of the formative years of any child of the 80s.

Interestingly, back in 2015 I had the opportunity to finally see — and to photograph — Whodini, who made an appearance at that year’s Rock Steady Crew Anniversary show at Central Park SummerStage. And I have to admit that there were among one of the most entertaining hip-hop shows I’ve ever seen.

May his memory be a blessing to his fans, his bandmates and to those who loved and knew him.
