Throwback: RIP Prince

Admittedly, I was a bigger Bowie fan than Prince — and yet, Prince’s music managed to be a major part of my life growing up in the 80s. Obviously, the man was a tremendous performer; but he was also one of his era’s greatest and most prolific songwriters, writing some of the 80s biggest hits or having some role on them and the list of those songs is ridiculously long. And much like the great Bob Dylan, Prince has had the luck of having a couple of artists record signature covers that have made people forget who actually wrote the song in the first place — i.e., Chaka Khan’s “I Feel For You,” and Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.”

As I mentioned earlier, today is a rather odd day in modern music history, as we celebrate Iggy Pop’s 70th birthday while morning the lost of Prince, who died a year ago today. If there’s anything to be learned from this, it’s that we should cherish and enjoy our musical legends for as long as we have them.
