if you know you’re contemporary electronica, you’d be familiar with John Davies, better known as Datassette. And as Datassette, Davies over the last decade has amassed an impressive catalog of material – including material recorded on CD-R, net labels and tiny independents. And interestingly, the record he recorded for Ai Records brought him to the attention of the folks at his current label, Apollo Records.
“Helvetica Calcium” is the latest single off of Davies’ forthcoming Cagney XOR Lacey EP, due to drop on March 11, and it’s a track that reminds me of drum ‘n’ bass electronica but smoother, more melodic – as though it takes up elements of house music. In any case, it’s probably the most DJ-friendly bit of electronica on the entire album (while being subtly trippy, at that).
