In the winter of 2010, the Ruby Suns’ main creative force, Ryan McPhun had recently split from his long-term girlfriend and bandmate, and while on vacation from his adopted home of New Zealand, he had found a artistic haven in Oslo, Norway. And while in Oslo, McPhun was looking for something new.
During the Ruby Suns’ first three albums, McPhun had developed a reputation for being something of a musical wayfarer, collecting styles and sounds from his travels. And while in Scandinavia, McPhun was heavily influenced by the glossy, electro pop that’s popular throughout the entire region. “Kingfisher Call Me,” is the latest single off the Ruby Suns’ fourth album, Christopher which Sub Pop Records will release on January 29, 2013. The album is reportedly an album that is in many ways a break up album. Not a sad breakup album, but an album that details the process of starting over, even if it isn’t about moving forward.
Anyway “Kingfisher Call Me,” remind me a bit of Niki and the Dove, St. Lucia, and Washed Out and with the keyboard solo, it suddenly reminds me of 1980s Prince. It’s a slick bit of downtempo electro pop with a catchy hook.
