Acclaimed Aussie JOVM mainstay Tame Impala‘s highly-anticipated fifth album, Deadbeat was released last week through Columbia Records.
Deeply inspired by bush doof culture and the Western Australia rave scene,Deadbeat sees Tame Impala mastermind Kevin Parker recasting himself as a sort of future primitive rave act. Conceived in various locations over the last handful of years, the album was largely galvanized between Parker’s hometown of Fremantle and his Inijidup, Western Australia-based studio Wave House during the first half of this year.
Renowned for being a perfectionist, Parker’s fifth Tame Impala album showcases an artist with a leveled-up mastery of songwriting but crafted with a newfound embrace of spontaneity. The result is a collection of remarkably catchy, hook-driven, club-friendly psych pop while being some of Parker’s most direct songwriting of his career to date. Sonically, there are timbres and textures that add new dimension to the material’s overall sound paired with a much richer, more playful vocal range.
Lyrically, the album finds Parker channeling an endless bummer with a self-deprecating fuck-up of a narrator stuck in a hopelessly negative feedback loop, when he should have long had his shit together. We all know this kind of dude — and in some cases, he is us. Thematically, the album suggests raving as self-inquiry, self-medication in lieu of self-care and the kick-on as domestic bliss. Dance and sweat your troubles, stresses and concerns away on the dance floor, y’all. Reality can wait another day or two — hell, fuck it, another three.
Deadbeat features the previously released “End of Summer,” “Loser,” “Dracula,” and album opener “My Old Ways.”
The acclaimed Aussie will be embarking on an international tour to support Deadbeat. The Stateside run starts with a four-night stand at Barclay’s Center from October 27, 2025 – November 1, 2025. As of late last week, there were low ticket warnings for two newly added Barclay’s Center dates –October 27 and October 28. October 31 and November 1 are sold out. Parker will then head on an UK and European Union tour in April. As always, all tour dates are below.
Now, if you’re a New York Metropolitan area local, you might recall that a couple of years ago, the iconic Cherry Lane Theatre was in danger of permanently closing. Back in 2023, the acclaimed studio A24 purchased the theatre, and under their ownership, the 166-seat theatre undergone a multi-year renovation with all of its technical equipment being updated, new seating installed, new film projector and screen installed and the lobby upgraded while keeping he theatre’s stage and historic details intact.
As it was once a beloved dining destination, a new addition to the space brings back that tradition with Wild Cherry, a new bar/restaurant from Lee Hanson and Riad Nasr, the team behind Frenchette, Le Rock and Le Veau d’Or, who were also recently named Outstanding Restaurateur by the James Beard Awards.
Produced by A24, A24 Music and Cherry Lane Theatre, Sound Check is an intimate live performance series recorded on the ironic Cherry Lane Theatre stage. The series launched earlier this month with a Danica Kleinknecht-directed, Smuggler-produced performance from Mark William Lewis, A24 Music’s first signed artist.
Tame Impala’s Sean Durkin-directed Sound Check session follows the release of Deadbeat and comes on the heels of his North American tour next week. The live session includes the acclaimed Aussie’s first live performance of album opener and latest single “My Old Ways,” as well as “Loser” and “Dracula.”
If this live footage is indicative of what we’ll be hearing on the JOVM mainstay’s upcoming tour, we’re all in for a real treat.
