New Audio: Deep Sea Diver Tackles Massive Attack’s “Teardrop”

Seattle-based JOVM mainstays Deep Sea Diver fourth album, last year’s Billboard Heart, which featured “Shovel,” “Let Me Go” feat. Madison Cunningham and “What Do I Know” was released to critical applause internationally. The JOVM mainstays will be playing two co-headlining Pacific Northwest shows with fellow JOVM mainstays and labelmates Nation of Language this week:

Along with that, the acclaimed Seattle-based outfit shared their take on Massive Attack’s beloved and deeply influential 1988 hit song “Teardrop,” featuring Cocteau TwinsElizabeth Fraser. Produced by the band’s Jessica Dobson and Peter Mansen at High Beam Studio, the Deep Sea Diver rendition of the song maintains the brooding atmosphere of the original but pairs it with a punchy, guitar-driven, New Wave-meets-indie rock arrangement, complete with twinkling synths. But at its core remains the original’s achingly tender beauty.

“We have always loved the voice and spirit of Elizabeth Fraser; her collaboration with Massive Attack is one of my all-time favorite songs. I was stopped in my tracks as a kid the first time I heard it,” says Deep Sea Diver’s Jessica Dobson. “It has a magic that is undeniable, and we wanted to live in that magic for a while and to show it to our audience.  Doing covers brings us back to connecting us to what we love and as we are writing new songs, we are really trying to purely focus on things that we love and are drawn to, even if mysteriously, like this one. A mysterious beauty.”
