New Video: The Surreal and Dream-like Visuals of Fleurie’s “Fire In My Bones”

Now, if you’ve been frequenting this site over the past two years or so, you’ve likely come across posts on Canton, MI-born, Nashville, TN-based JOVM mainstay Lauren Straham, a classically trained pianist and singer/songwriter, who writes, records and performs under the moniker Fleurie. Over the past two years, Straham has seen a growing national profile for a songwriting approach that meshes singer/songwriter-based pop with slickly produced, contemporary electronic music that puts her in a lengthy list of blogosphere dominating female pop artists including Phoebe Ryan, CAPPA, Chelsea Lankes, Marie Dahlstrøm and others.

“Fire In My Bones,” the first single off Fleurie’s sophomore EP, Arrows is an atmospheric yet tense single that focuses on the internal battle within between one’s fear and their hope and the emotional dynamic that tension creates — and the song evokes that dynamic tension by alternating between quieter, more introspective verses followed by anthemic and soaring hooks. And as a result, it gives an ethereal pop song an underlying darkness.

The recently release video possesses a dream-like logic as it follows a little girl, who’s playing on a trampoline in various outfits as she presumably gets older — at one point jumping on a trampoline wearing a graduation cap and gown, and later in what seems to be a wedding dress. The video cuts between Straham in a a studio jumping on a trampoline, dripping syrup on to surfaces and being pensive. In some way it suggests that the girl is Straham’ s young doppleganger.
