Throwback: Happy 103rd Birthday Dizzy Gillespie!

Young Dizzy with his orchestra performing “Salt Peanuts.”

The godfather of bebop John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie would be 103 if he was still alive today. His influence on what we know jazz to be has been massive: He wound up influencing Miles Davis, Jon Faddis, Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown, Arturo Sandoval, Lee Morgan, Chuck Mangione and a list of others, who pushed the bebop sound and approach in radically new directions.

Happy birthday, Diz, whenever you are.
