October is a busy month in music history.

- Stevie Ray Vaughan was born 70 years ago on October 3
The Roots‘ Black Thought, arguably one of the greatest living emcees celebrates his 51st birthday today. And if you don’t believe me, check out the 10 minute freestyle he did on Funkmaster Flex‘s Hot 97 show. His work as a member of The Roots is legendary — but his solo work in my mind is some most important and necessary hip hop recordings of the decade.
