We’ve somehow managed to survive through July so far, eh? Well, July is a busy month in music history.
- One of the most important figures of the blues, Chicago blues especially, Willie Dixon was born 110 years ago on this day
Another legendary bluesman, James Cotton was born on this day in 1935.. Cotton had a lengthy stint with Muddy Waters‘ band before starting his own band, The Jimmy Cotton Blues Quartet with Otis Spann. He went solo while still collaborating occasionally with Muddy Waters.
Some of my favorite Muddy Waters tunes feature Cotton on harmonica including “Got My Mojo Workin,'” “She’s Nineteen” and others.
Happy birthday legend! Happy birthday, wherever you are!
