John William Coltrane, one of the most influential, important and beloved musicians of the 20th century was born 97 years ago on September 23. Now, I’ve mentioned this publicly countless times: My father adored Coltrane. And as a child, Coltrane was God in my home. My father was a troubled, complicated, deeply flawed man, but on that one, he was probably right.
Happy belated birthday, Mr. Coltrane! Happy birthday, wherever you are!
