I saw Hercules and Love Affair during the first day of the Catalpa Festival, and I have to admit that I was quite impressed. Their sound reminded me a lot of the gigantic, cavernous room-filling house music Hot 97 used to play up until about 1992. Hercules and Love Affair recently released the video for the DJ Kicks mix of “Release Me,” and you’ll hear both modern production and vintage production throughout – the synth lines sound like they came from an old synth that someone blew the dust off. And the video interestingly enough, looks as though it were recorded in 1991. Still, it’s a catchy, hook-filled track that has a hedonistic sexy feel to it that’s irresistible.
