Live Concert Photography: Jonny Couch with Giggly Boys Shining Mirrors and Horny at Berlin Under A 8/1/19
Over the past month or so, I’ve written a bit about the up-and-coming, Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Jonny Couch. And as you may recall, Couch initially began his career as a dummer, who played in a number of local punk bands before reinventing himself and his career a few years ago with the release of 2016’s debut EP Animal Instinct, a soulful take on 80s synth pop that drew comparisons to Bryan Ferry — and received praise from Louder Than War and High Times.
Released earlier this month, Couch’sPeter Mavrogeorgis-produced full-length debut Mystery Man will further develop the Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter’s reputation for crafting infectious material that’s seemingly (influenced by and) descended from 70s and 80s power pop and New Wave. “My favorite bands are Cheap Trick and Buzzcocks,” Couch says in press notes, “but this is more of a personal record than a band effort, highly influenced by power pop solo artists like Nick Lowe.” But there’s also elements of Duran Duran and The Psychedelic Furs as well.
Couch’s headlining set at Berlin Under A celebrated the release of his full-length debut and featured two of my favorite songs from the albums of far — the Roxy Music meets No Jacket Required-era Phil Collins -like album title track “Mystery Man” and the shimmering, Cheap Trick and The Cars-like “Vertigo.” Opening a night of local indie rock and pop were punk act Giggly Boys, psych rock/garage rock act Shining Mirrors and sultry synth funk act Horny. Check out photos from the show below.
Giggly Boys is an up-and-coming Brooklyn-based indie rock/punk rock quartet, who may arguably be one of the hardest working bands in this city’s indie scene, as they’ve played sets at Mercury Lounge, Sunnyvale, Good Room and Rippers with a number of local acts including Drug Pizza, Pink Mexico, Milk Dick, Negative Gemini and a growing list of others.
Comprised of Drew Robinson, Eric Ordaz, Shannon Minor, Penneisha Love, and Craig Bon, the Brooklyn-based indie quintet Shining Mirrors specialize in a 60s and 70s inspired psych rock sound that recalls — to my ears, at least — Psychic Ills and others.
Opening the night was the sultry synth pop funk act Horny.
