New Video: Hand Habits Shares Optimistic “Wheel of Change”

Meg Duffy is a Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, who over the past decade has spent the bulk of the past decade on the road with acclaimed artist Perfume Genius and as a solo artist, with their recording project Hand Habits.

Duffy’s fourth Hand Habits album, Blue Reminder is slated for an August 22, 2025 release through Fat Possum Records. Recorded in Los Angeles with co-producer Joseph Lorge, Blue Reminder sees Duffy collaborating with an impressive and wildly talented collection of musicians, including Alan Wyffels, Gregory Uhlmann, Olivia Kaplan, Blake Mills, Tim Carr and SML’s Joshua Johnson and Anna Butters. Duffy’s affinity for playing live in a room with other musicians was the impetus for the album’s recording sessions, which were largely tracked live.

Duffy’s fourth Hand Habits album reportedly sees the singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist walking an emotional tightrope between hope and a quiet anxiety, battling around the question of what one does when happiness actually comes knocking. At the core of the album’s material is the fact that genuine joy of love and self-actualization are almost always balanced against the potential fear of losing those things once you’ve found them — or stupidly stumbled upon them. “For this record I set out to no longer shapeshift when it came to the person I become in the face of love,” Duffy explains.

Blue Reminder‘s lead single “Wheel of Change” is a crafted yet deeply lived-in song that sounds a bit like a soulful synthesis of Carole King’s Tapestry and 70s Southern fried rock. Throughout the song, a proud and stubbornly optimistic narrator sings of how past loves and emotional collapse clear the way for what comes next, while true and profound romantic love — prickly, complicated and yet deeply illuminating — often looms large, just around the corner.

“Both lyrically and in its production, this song is about the impossibility of return—you can’t go back to the way things were, no matter how much you might want to hold on to a time, or a feeling, or a person,” Duffy explains. “Lyrically there’s a kind of desperation (‘I need it now more than ever’), but in it there’s also a request, ‘don’t take it away just yet,’ which is not a question but a demand, and I wanted the production to reflect that. That in longing, there can be this sharper, wild edge. Like, no I need this, give it to me, don’t take it away.”

Directed by Otium, the accompanying video is a surreal fever dream, fueled by exhaustion, longing and a hard-fought optimism, much like what’s at the core of the song.

Duffy also announced a fall North American tour to support Blue Reminder, as well as opening dates with Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Japanese Breakfast. These are also in addition to previously announced European Union and UK dates with Perfume Genius. Pre-sales begin tomorrow with general on-sale starting on Friday, June 6, 10:00am local time.
