Pioneering hip-hop legend Roxanne Shanté celebrates her 54th birthday today.
Shanté was one of the first women emcees to become popular, and is best known for writing and recording “Roxanne’s Revenge,” the response song to U.F.TO.‘s “Roxanne Roxanne.” She also was one of a rare number of female artists, who had songs that openly talked about domestic abuse, informed by her own experiences.
Emcees like Queen Latifah, Lil’ Kim, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Missy Elliot and on and on owe her a debt of gratitude.
Happy birthday, Roxanne! May there be many, many, may more!
