Throwback: Happy 55th Birthday, Questlove!

It’s 2026 y’all. May it be a kinder, better year for all of us. January is a busy month for music birthdays.

The Roots‘ co-founder and drummer Questlove celebrates his 55th — yes, y’all, 55th! — birthday today. The Roots are one of the most important acts of hip-hop, responsible for helping to push the boundaries of the genre’s sound and approach while still being true to it. They’re also instrumental to neo-soul movement, through collaborations with Erykah BaduJill ScottCody ChesnuTT and a lengthy list of others.

Plus, The Roots are among one of the most talented bands in the entire world, capable of playing just about any genre known to humankind — with ease.

Happy birthday, brother! May there be many, many more!

The Joy of Violent Movement is a completely independent and completely D.I.Y. media outlet. Over the course of this site’s 15+ year history, I’ve used my fiercely independent stance to cover music with an eclectic and global perspective that a lot of other publications just don’t have — and will likely never have.

To that end, I could use your support to continue to keep bringing you my unique global perspective on music. There are a number of ways that you can support this work.

I’ve been told that some people would prefer to make a one-time donation because it’s easy and less of an obligation. So, if you’re able to make a one-time donation, there’s a donation box below.
