Throwback: Happy 78th Birthday, Dolly Parton!

January is a busy and auspicious month in music history:

Today is a rather busy and auspicious day in music history:

The legendary and incomparable Dolly Parton celebrates her 78th birthday today. Parton is undoubtedly one of the greatest singer/songwriters and performers out there right now — and of course, ever. As a songwriter, there’s the story about how she wrote “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You,” her two signature songs in the same day.

Parton is a feminist icon — “9 to 5” and the film that followed it and starred Parton, along with Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda are way ahead of their time. She is also a queer icon. But she’s probably most proud of being “The Book Lady” to a couple of generations of kids, who have received books through her literacy program.

And she’s one of a handful of artists, who have been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame.

Happy birthday, Dolly! May there be many, many more!
