Throwback: Happy 80th Birthday, Dolly Parton!

It’s 2026 y’all. May it be a kinder, better year for all of us. January is a busy month for music birthdays.

The legendary and incomparable Dolly Parton celebrates her 80th — yes, y’all, 80th! — birthday today. Parton is undoubtedly one of the greatest singer/songwriters and performers out there right now — and of course, ever. As a songwriter, there’s the story about how she wrote “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You,” her two signature songs in the same day.

Parton is a feminist icon — “9 to 5” and the film that followed it and starred Parton, along with Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda are way ahead of their time. She is also a queer icon. But she’s probably most proud of being “The Book Lady” to a couple of generations of kids, who have received books through her literacy program.

And she’s one of a handful of artists, who have been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame.

Happy birthday, Dolly! May there be many, many more!

The Joy of Violent Movement is a completely independent and completely D.I.Y. media outlet. Over the course of this site’s 15+ year history, I’ve used my fiercely independent stance to cover music with an eclectic and global perspective that a lot of other publications just don’t have — and will likely never have.

To that end, I could use your support to continue to keep bringing you my unique global perspective on music. There are a number of ways that you can support this work.

I’ve been told that some people would prefer to make a one-time donation because it’s easy and less of an obligation. So, if you’re able to make a one-time donation, there’s a donation box below.
