Last night, I learned that the great salsa composer and pianist Eddie Palmieri died. He was 88. Palmeiri frequently paired a jazz-driven aesthetic to salsa, while also drawing from Cuban and other Caribbean styles. This lead to incredibly danceable material that swung hard — and were roomy enough for members to solo.
Palmieri’s influence on salsa has been — and will forever remain — towering.
Long live Eddie Palmieri!
