Throwback: R.I.P. Roy Haynes

I was taking a brief break from work and was doom scrolling when I saw the Blue Note Jazz Club post an in memoriam post for the legendary Roy Haynes. Haynes, one of the greatest jazz drummers everand one of the most recorded jazz drummers in history celebrated his 99th birthday earlier this year.

Over the course of his 80+ year career, Haynes has played swing, bebop, jazz fusion, avant garde jazz and is considered a pioneer of jazz drumming. He has played with a who’s who of legends including Stan GetzCharlie ParkerLester YoungBud PowellMiles DavisSarah VaughanSonny Rollins, Thelonious MonkArt Blakey,Eric DolphyOliver NelsonRay Charles, and an extraordinarily long list of others.

You can’t love jazz without knowing of this man and his incredible work. Long live, Mr. Roy Haynes! Rest in peace, sir.
