Live Concert Photography: Theodore at Mercury Lounge 3/26/19
Theodore is a critically applauded, Athens-based multi-instrumentalist, composer and singer/songwriter, who has received classical training in piano and traditional Greek folk music, before heading to London, where he studied Music Composition. Interestingly, since completing his studies, the Greek-born and-based multi-instrumentalist, composer and singer/songwriter has received attention nationally and internationally for meshing classical compositions and arrangements with rock instrumentation and subtle electronic production to create a cinematic sound that possesses elements of psych rock, prog rock, experimental rock and post rock; in fact, it shouldn’t be surprising that Theodore has cited the likes of Sigur Ros, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Manos Hadjidakis, Vangelis Papathanasiou, Nils Frahm, The National, Olafur Arnalds and Max Richter as being major influences on his sound and approach.
Arguably one of his country’s biggest artists, Theodore has written the film scores for Matina Megla’s Window, Vladan Nikolic’s film Bourek and he was once commission to write a new, live score for Buster Keaton’s classic 1928 silent comedy The Cameraman, which he and his backing band performed during a screening at the Temple of Zeus. Building upon a growing profile, his sophomore album It Is But It’s Not, which was recorded and performed live at London’s famed Abbey Road Studio 2 amassed more than 2 million YouTube views — and as a result, Theodore and his backing band wound up making appearances across the international festival circuit with sets at Reeperbahn Festival, Eurosonic Nooderslag, Release Festival and SXSW. And adding to a lofty resume, he and his backing band have opened for Sigur Ros and DIIV, while receiving praise from a number of internationally renowned, major media outlets including Clash Magazine, Music Week, Tsugi, FGUK, Gaffa and Szene, as well as airplay from BBC Radio 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne.
The Greek multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter and composer’s third full-length album Inner Dynamics was released last year, and the album thematically found him looking inward to examine the dichotomies and dualities of his identity in order to seek new creative potential.
Theodore and his backing band went on an extensive Stateside tour that included appearances at the inaugural New Colossus Festival, his second appearance at SXSW, an NPR Tiny Desk session and an opening set at Mercury Lounge last week. Check out photos from the Mercury Lounge set below.
