New Video: Introducing, the Soaringly Anthemic Sound of Kobe, Japan’s The Fin

Comprised of Yuto Uchino (vocals and synths), Ryosuke Odagaki (guitar), Takayasu Taguchi (bass) and Kaoru Nakazawa (drums), the Kobe, Japan-based quartet The fin have won attention across their native Japan for pairing lyrics written and sung in English that address the universal theme of everyday uncertainties with a sound that possesses elements of synth pop, chillwave and dream pop. And as a result, the band have quickly developed a growing national profile as they’ve played Japan’s major festivals including Fuji Rock, Rising Sun and Viva La Rock.

With a nine-date Stateside tour, which included an appearance at SXSW and a forthcoming UK tour, the Japanese quartet hope to expand their profile internationally after the release of their Night Time EP slated for release on December 4.  “Night Time,” the latest single and EP title track off Night Time is a swooningly earnest song consisting of shimmering guitar chords played through gentle layers of reverb, cascading synths, propulsive and forceful drumming, sinuous bass lines and soaringly anthemic hooks paired with Uchino’s plaintive vocals. As Uchino explains in press notes: “When I wrote ‘Night Time,’ I was living far from a train station. If I missed the last train, I walked back home alone in the middle of the night. There were no cars, no people and sometimes no lights. But I had a lot of things in my head, such as past memories, hopes and fears. All of them turned into this song.” And because of that, the core of the song possesses a wistful, dreamy feel.

Sonically and aesthetically, the Kobe, Japan-based quartet’s sound has been compared favorably to the likes of Beach House, Toro Y Moi, Mew and Washed Out although to my ears, The fin’s sound is reminiscent of Oracular Spectacular-era MGMT, in particular, a song like “Electric Feel;In Ghost Colours-era Cut Copy; I Love You It’s Cool-era Bear in Heaven, in particular, “Kiss Me Crazy;” St. Lucia and others.

The recently released official video captures young people doing what they do best — hanging out, goofing off, aimlessly driving around, spliced with footage of the band performing the song.
