If you’ve been frequenting this site over the past few years, you may be familiar with Atlanta-based trio and JOVM mainstay act The Coathangers. And in the decade plus since their formation, the band has released five full-length albums, has gone on a number of lengthy North American and European tours, which have firmly cemented their reputation for writing incredibly catchy yet scuzzy punk rock — and for unruly and wild live shows. Interestingly, the material off the band’s most recent effort, 2016’s Nosebleed Weekend continues along the same lines as 2014’s Suck My Shirt as the material generally possesses a similar primal simplicity with the material meshing elements of garage rock, surfer rock and punk rock and anthemic hooks.
“Down Down” Nosebleed Weekend‘s latest single will further cement the band’s reputation for crafting incredibly catchy hook in a song that possesses an obvious studio sheen — but without removing the scuzzy and primal feel of the album’s previously released material; in fact, “Down Down” possesses a mosh pit-ready feel while pairing it with a 60s girl group-leaning harmonies and layers of distorted and towering guitar chords.
Directed by Matt Odom, the recently released music video for “Down Down” interestingly enough draws from old footage and videos of 60s girls groups playing on American Bandstand, The Ed Sullivan Show and others complete with the members of the band singing and playing in front of psychedelic and art school projects — but with a clean, hyper-modern feel.
The trio will be on tour throughout the summer and fall, including a July 12, 2016 stop at New York’s Bowery Ballroom. Check out tour dates below/
