Throwback: Happy 71st Birthday, Cyndi Lauper!

June is another very busy month for music birthdays:

• One of the greatest singer/songwriters to ever live, Curtis Mayfield was born 82 years ago on June 3

• The Psychedelic Furs and Love Spit Love frontman Richard Butler celebrated his 68th birthday on June 5 
• The legendary Prince was born 66 years ago on June 7
• Duran Duran‘s Nick Rhodes celebrated his 62nd on June 8
• “Mr. Excitement,” the great Jackie Wilson was born 90 years ago on June 9
• Howlin’ Wolf, one of the greatest bluesmen to have ever done it was born 114 years ago on June 10
• Boy George celebrated his 63rd birthday on June 14
• Ice Cube celebrated his 55th birthday on June 15
• Waylon Jennings was born 87 years ago on June 15
• Tupac Shakur was born 53 years ago on June 16
• The O’Jays‘ Eddie Levert celebrated his 82nd birthday on June 16

If you’re a child of the 80s as I am, Cyndi Lauper was one of the biggest stars of the decade. She was also responsible or a part of some of the decade’s biggest songs — including “We Are The World.” And for me, a Queens boy, I was most proud of the fact that Lauper grew up in nearby South Ozone Park. (I think it’s about 3 miles or so from my apartment.) 

Lauper celebrates her 71st birthday today. Happy birthday, Cyndi! May there be many, many more!
