Throwback: Happy 75th Birthday, Verdine White!

I know I can’t speak for everyone but 2026 has been a very odd and very disappointing year so far. But we’ve survived to July. And that means we have five months left for the year. May the rest of 2026 get better for me — and if you’ve been struggling with things this year, may it get better for you, too. But even in struggle, there’s music, friends and community that can sustain us. 

Of course, July is a busy month of music birthdays. So, as always, let’s celebrate our legends and favorites, eh?

• Larry Levan, the pioneer of house music, whose Paradise Garage DJ sets were the prototype of the modern dance club was born 72 years ago on July 20  
• George Clinton celebrated his 85th birthday on July 21
• Slash celebrated his 61st birthday on July 23 
• Depeche Mode co-founder Martin Gore celebrated his 65th birthday on July 23

Earth Wind and Fire’s Verdine White celebrates his 75th birthday. Founded in Chicago back in 1969, Earth Wind and Fire is one of the most commercially successful acts ever: They’ve sold over 90 million records globally. Along with that they’ve been nominated for 17 Grammys and have won six. They’ve been nominated for 12 American Music Awards and have won four. They’ve also received an ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Heritage Award, a BET Lifetime Achievement Award, a Soul Train Legend Award, a NARAS Signature Governor’s Award, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2012 Congressional Horizon Award and they were a Kennedy Center Honors Honoree back in 2019.

None of that should be surprising. The legendary soul act has written and recorded a batch of beloved — and funky! — songs that have brought millions across the world a lot of joy and fond memories.
