Throwback: Happy 81st Birthday MIcheal Nesmith!/Happy 78th Birthday, Davy Jones!

December 30th is an especially auspicious day for music births:

• The legendary and incomparable Patti Smith celebrates her 77h birthday today.
• The legendary bluesman Bo Diddley was born 95 years ago today.

Additionally, The Monkees‘ Micheal Nesmith was born 81 years ago today. And his bandmate Davy Jones was born 78 years ago today. As a child of the ’80s, I grew up watching The Monkees repeats on Nickelodeon, if I remember it correctly. They also had a comeback album in the mid ’80s that was quite a big deal; I remember seeing a video or two on MTV. 

The Monkees was a bit of goofy, clearly Beatles-esque fun with some really great songs. I somehow didn’t know that Neil Diamond wrote “I’m A Believer,” but now that I think of it, I hear Neil Diamond in the song. He also wrote a handful of other Monkees songs. Go figure!
