The past week or so has been a rather auspicious one in music history:
- The 54th anniversary of Nate Dogg‘s birth was on August 19
- Led Zeppelin‘s Robert Plant turned 75 on August 20
- Isaac Hayes was born 81 years ago on August 20
- KRS One turned 58 on August 20
- John Lee Hooker was born 106 years ago on August 22
- Alice in Chains‘ Layne Staley was born 56 years on August 22
- Living Colour founder and lead guitarist Vernon Reid celebrated his 65th birthday on August 22
The past week has been so busy that I forgot a very important music birthdays: punk icon and frontman of The Clash, Joe Strummer was born 71 years ago on August 21.
We tragically lost Strummer at the all too young age of 50, 21 years ago, but his work with The Clash remains massively influential and important. Literally every single punk band since 1977 can trace their sound back to both Ramones and The Clash. But more important, he has been missed.
Happy birthday, Joe! Happy birthday, wherever you are.
