Throwback: R.I.P. David Sanborn

Caption: You’ll see a young David Sanborn and a young Luther Vandross in this live footage.
Caption: More live footage of Sanborn and Vandross with Bowie. Still rather mind-blowing.

I was in the middle of my morning routine: watching NY1, eating breakfast, going through emails and chatting with mom when I learned through Questlove‘s Instagram that David Sanborn had died.

Sanborn was quietly — and at times quite loudly — a part of much of the music I’ve loved throughout my life, and I suspect the music that much of y’all have loved. He played sax on David Bowie‘s Young Americans. He worked with the great Bob James, The Brecker Brothers, Bryan Ferry, Bootsy Collins, Stevie Wonder, The Roots, George Duke and countless others.

Long live, David Sanborn!
