We’ve managed to make it to June. I don’t know about you, but this year has been a brutal, fucked up slog. But it’s Pride Month — and there’s still art, music and small joys.
June is a another busy month for music birthdays:
- Alanis Morisette celebrated her 51st birthday today on June 1
- The Rolling Stones‘ Charlie Watts was born 84 years ago on June 2
- Cypress HIll’s and Prophets of Rage’s B Real celebrated his 55th — yes, ya’ll 55th! — birthday on June 2
One of the greatest singer/songwriters to ever live, Curtis Mayfield was born on this day 83 years ago. While most know him for his incredible Superfly soundtrack, his work was the soundtrack of the Civil Rights Movement. How many people can say that?
So let’s celebrate some of the most memorable, greatest songs ever recorded — and the man who wrote them. Happy birthday, Curtis. Happy birthday, wherever you are!
Happy belated birthday, legend! May there be many, many more!
