I was scrolling through Instagram when I learned that the legendary jazz singer/songwriter and musician Sheila Jordan died. She was 96. But I was aware that her passing was most likely imminent: A couple of weeks ago, I learned that she was entering hospice — and the account posting this asked for prayers, thoughts and help for her family.
I caught Jordan once, on an incredible Winter Jazz Fest Detroit/Marcus Belgrave tribute showcase at Le Poisson Rouge that also featured the equally legendary Ron Carter. In the early part of her career, she was connected to Charlie Parker and Charles Mingus, and she has had notable collaborations with Carla Bley (who my dad really loved), and a lengthy list of others.
Long live Ms. Sheila Jordan!
