Throwback: Happy 75th Birthday, Mark Mothersbaugh!

We’ve somehow made it to May y’all. 5 months in to a brutal slog of a calendar year. I’m exhausted and fed up. And I’m sure most of y’all out there feel the same. The terrible thing is that my sense is that things are going to get a lot worse. We’re in hell.

But there’s music, art, small pleasures, and every day joys. We’ll cling to that as much as possible.

DEVO co-founder, frontman and primary songwriter Mark Mothersbaugh celebrates his 75th — yes, 75th! — birthday today. DEVO is arguably one of the outrageously weird, funniest and arguably one of the most original bands in rock history. They may have imitators but no one has come close.

Plus, I think their version of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” is the best ever recorded — because it just seems sexually frustrated.

As for me, I grew up listening to a lot of DEVO. Mom used to clean while playing DEVO’s “Whip It” and other songs and I’d happily bounce around in my crib or in the apartment. My love of music goes back that far — and maybe even further than that.

Funnily, the guy behind those weird songs also did the themes and soundtracks to every Nickelodeon TV show in the 90s. Every single time that I think of that, it makes me laugh.

Happy birthday, Mark!
