Throwback: Happy 83rd Birthday, George Benson!

It’s March 2026. We’re about to blow through the first third of the year. Things have gotten messier and more hellish. Apparently, we’re now at war. We’ve got masked goons grabbing people off the streets and shooting civilians. The economy is reeling. We’re dealing with a mad, dying king. And yet, we have to simultaneously fight fascists and get on with our daily lives.

But there’s music, art and community. I hope that this site is a bit of escape and maybe even a reminder of how much community means when the world is running down.

George Benson, arguably one of the greatest vocalists and guitarists to ever live, celebrates his 83rd birthday today. Benson was a child prodigy, whose professional career started when he turned 19, playing soul jazz with the likes of Jack McDuff and others.

He then launched a wildly successful solo career, a career that has seen him bouncing between soul, R&B, jazz, pop and scat singing. 1976’s Breezin’ was certified triple platinum, while hitting #1 on the Billboard Top 100 Charts. And throughout his career, he has won 10 Grammy Awards — and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

As a small boy, I would hear a ton of Benson’s songs while in my dad’s car. He’d have the smooth jazz station on the radio. The song I remember hearing the most — and had grown quite fond of for a period of time — was his version of “On Broadway.”

Happy birthday, sir! May there be many, many more!

The Joy of Violent Movement is a completely independent and completely D.I.Y. media outlet. Over the course of this site’s 15+ year history, I’ve used my fiercely independent stance to cover music with an eclectic and global perspective that a lot of other publications just don’t have — and will likely never have.

To that end, I could use your support to continue to keep bringing you my unique global perspective on music. There are a number of ways that you can support this work.

I’ve been told that some people would prefer to make a one-time donation because it’s easy and less of an obligation. So, if you’re able to make a one-time donation, there’s a donation box below.
