Throwback: Happy 67th Birthday, Vanity!

It’s 2026 y’all. May it be a kinder, better year for all of us. January is a busy month for music birthdays.

Denise Katrina Matthews, best known as Vanity was born on this day 67 years ago. Matthews was a singer, model and actor, who was best known for her work with Vanity 6, a side project (of sorts) created by the legendary Prince, who wrote and produced the material on their first album, including their biggest hit “Nasty Girl.”

If you’re a child of the 80s, as I am, “Nasty Girl” is one of your jams — and it brings back memories of some party or some mixtape you made.

We lost her a decade ago. But, man, some of those tunes were fucking great. Happy birthday! Happy birthday, wherever you are!

The Joy of Violent Movement is a completely independent and completely D.I.Y. media outlet. Over the course of this site’s 15+ year history, I’ve used my fiercely independent stance to cover music with an eclectic and global perspective that a lot of other publications just don’t have — and will likely never have.

To that end, I could use your support to continue to keep bringing you my unique global perspective on music. There are a number of ways that you can support this work.

I’ve been told that some people would prefer to make a one-time donation because it’s easy and less of an obligation. So, if you’re able to make a one-time donation, there’s a donation box below.
