I just finished a Webinar hosted by Music Mangers Forum Canada that I was taking part in when I received text message from a friend with a link to an article in The Irish Times that read “Sinead O’Connor, acclaimed Dublin singer, dies aged 56.”
As soon as I saw it my response was “Oh no!” This was followed by me saying to her that I know a brother, who absolutely adored Sinead O’Connor and that he would be devastated by the news. Music fandom is very much that way.
I can’t say that I was the biggest O’Connor fan but she was uncompromising, fearless — and she had at various times lived a heartbreakingly difficult, troubled life. But from what I’ve read about her, she was also one of life’s true — and very rare — characters. And while her work will remain with us, winning over new fans, admittedly she will be missed dearly. My thoughts are with her family, her collaborators and her fans.
Long live Sinead O’Connor!
